History of the Detroit Pistons
February 26, 2008 - The team was founded in Fort Wayne in 1941, playing in the National Basketball League (NBL). They were owned by Fred Zollner and were called Zollner's Pistons, since Zollner was a manufacturer of car, truck and locomotive pistons. The team because the Fort Wayne Pistons in 1948, and Zollner helped form the Nation Basketball Association by combining the BAA and the NBL and brought his team into the newly formed NBA.
The small size of the Fort Wayne area made it difficult for the team to be profitable, which led to their move in 1957 to Detriot, a city that had not seen a professional basketball team since the Detroit Falcons, who folded in 1947. They finally settled on the name the Detriot Pistons after their move.
